Default The 1997 tranny is known to fail a lot more than the 1998 model

even though the only difference is the chip controling it.

I've heard the tranny issue, I am still mystfied by the only differences being a couple of chips (other than the shifter gate). Most of the issues I had heard centered around a t-converter seal. Seams I could get the Tranny ECU and gate from a total and have the "upgrade". Seeing as they had the tip in Europe why not in the US.

I don't think it is the chips. I think it is the quality of the parts that it was manufactured with.

But that is just my theory.

The seal, valve body and ECU. Might be a few other things too.

Default i've driven it now...

it's nice car! quiet, good handling, fast decent cornering for a USS enterprise class cruiser :-).

i have some more info as to why it's low priced: it only has the CD stacker and 17in wheels as options, no phone, no WWP, no CWP. and i think the
guy is anxious to get rid of it.

i want to drive an a6 before i decide.

thanks to all for the great comments and input.

Default Re: How many miles ? At a ( Audi ) dealer or private party ?

this is from a small used car dealer, really a broker-type business. he's offered to find one in another color, or an a6 if i want one.

43K miles. leather all looks pretty good, everything works as near as i can tell from a 30min. test drive.

Default Sounds like a nice car. Audi dealer has certified pre-owned program.

Default my wife and I drove everything...

She really liked the A6-2.7T (4.2 is OK too). The A6 2.8 just didn't have enough power for her. In the end the used A8 was about $6K less than the new A6, and it is more luxurious...it's just a damn nice car. That being said I prefer the A6, but that's just me. Actually I prefer the S4...or perhaps one of each.

Rear head rests do retract via switch on dash.
