Default Coolant Level

I was going through my 1999 A8 that, I have owned for 2 weeks and I noticed that the coolant level to be way below the low level line. I have monitored it everyday and have not found any leaks and the reservior looks to be in perfect condtion.

The engine runs fine and the temp guage stays a little below the 1/2 mark. I went down to monterey last weekend driving hard and still performs fine. I plan to add more G12 and also take it in to the shop next week.

Any ideas on why the level could be that low without a leak and why it would not cause a problem being below the "low" line?

Josh

Default "How Low is Low" . . . do you mean low while sitting in the passenger

seat? were you sitting up? Sometimes car leveling problems develop when the driver places both feet in the car.

Yes, I beleive it was low when it was purchased, but does coolant evaporate over time? I was thinking the only reason to be low on coolant would be a leak. All other fluids are full. With no leaks, it is puzzling.

I was outside of the car. The level is way below the low level line, near the bottom of the res.

Default If there are no leaks, is it possible to assume that indeed it was low at purchase

and if you fill it now there wont be a problem?

Default Where would it evaporate to? Overheating might do that

but in the normal course of driving theres no way you are going to loose that much coolant sans a leak.

that's want i am thinking. shouldn't there be a noticable overheating problem if the coolant is that low?
