Default Coolant temperature Indicator Moves to Hot

I haven't been driving my A8 for a couple of weeks. Today i was in NYC traffic (parking lot) for 2 hours straight and AC on. almost ran out of gas and right before I pulled over to refuel the temperature indicator was almost 3/4 to the right close to the Hot mark. I have never seen it move before on any of my VW or audis. Then when I started moving and after refueling it went back to normal. What do you guys suspect it that normal or should I be checking thermostat, mix etc. I am pretty sure I was hearing the fans working while idling.

Me too. Today it was only 73 deg out and my fan was constantly kicking on with the temp at half way

Default First check the fan -- maybe it's only on low speed

It should run at a second speed before the gauge leaves the normal mark. That the temperature went down when you started moving suggests more the fan than the thermostat.

When everything's working correctly, I've seen the gauge go higher than normal only when idling in traffic on a 100 F day.

Default My guess is that the thermostat was sticking, after all ...

It probably hasn't had to fully open in months. If it unstuck itself, you won't need to do anything.

It is worthwhile though, to check the coolant level, and as ttuling said, that the electric fan will run at high speed. If both are OK but the car runs over 1/2 on the guage again, you probably should have the thermostat checked before the weather gets really hot.

Default I should have mentioned that a bad thermostat can disable the first two fan speeds...

by sending so little coolant through the radiator than the thermoswitch never gets hot. That's when a kitchen thermometer stuck into the radiator fins near the switch can tell what's going on. (Lower right corner.)

The high (third) speed is triggered when the gauge reaches the second long mark after the thick normal mark (112 C).

When my thermostat was bad, the first sign was running hot under heavy load, not at idle.

Default My 98 A8 temp goes way up in traffic or even waiting in line a a car wash.

My guy said there is most likely something going on with the fan. I noticed it in the dead of winter but he suggested leaving it till the weather is warmer. He is going to check the thermostat, and if needed he said he has tweaked them before to ensure either both fans will engage or that the second will engage earlier.
Not really sure what he's talking about, but the guys been working exclusively on Audi and VW for 16 years now.
