Default Crazy tow Idea....or is it?

Hey all. Got a question. Has anyone ever tried to tow a little uhaul trailer like this...

http://www.uhaul.com/guide/index.aspx?equipment=trailer-4x8

..behind a 2002 S8 or like vehicle? All I would need to put in the trailer would be a Queen sized bed mattress, boxspring, the support bars, headboard, a 61" flat TV weighing about 80 pounds, and maybe another 40 pounds of random electronics, etc. Is this a wayyyy bad idea or doable?

The cost between the little tow trailer and a whole truck pulling my car behind it is well over a grand, and I'm a cheap bastard. Any thoughts/feeling/ideas?

Default Crazy like a fox!

Do you have a tow hitch? If so, why not? I remember seeing some pics of a guy across the pond towing his VW magic bus on a trailer with his //S8. I think a car with this much power/weight could handle that little thing.

No I dont have a hitch, but they rent them. I do not know much about how it gets mounted/installed. Is it like you gotta drill into the frame or something to mount it? How difficult/expensive is that?

Default Just one hitch

I don't think you'll find a rental place that has one for a D2 A8, and I don't think you'll find any place to buy one. Tozo made his own, search the archives for pictures.

The hitch'd have to be aluminum too to prevent Galvanic corrosion. I'd bet almost anything that any of the "normal" hitch mfg's only make them in steel. Tozo, that fist pic looks like Aluminum, is that Reese aluminum? Are the mounting points aluminum?

It is steel just like the Audi factory hitch. It is insulated from the frame.

Default There is a towing "eye" on the passenger's side. Audi uses big galvanized washers.

I've used a heavy duty tape like Duct tape on the contact surfaces.

Default Aircraft make use of ferrous fasteners in Aluminum structure all the time.

Bset practices would suggest a coat of paint to seal the surfaces if possible.

Just a perspective to be less than "over reactive" (Sick pun I know)
