Default Cruise control FLAKY

Hi Guys! My cruise seems to have a mind of it's own. It works sometimes, and then doesn't at others. I have VAG COM, and there are no fault codes present. At this point, I am guessing that the Multi function switch might be the culprit. Any ideas as to something, easier cheaper to check?

Thanks in Advance for any input.

Hmm, mine doesn't work at all. Where to start troubleshooting?

Default Maybe, just maybe, it's as simple as oxidized contacts on the stalk.

I think that was my problem. The more I use it the more reliably it seems to operate.

Default Mine will sometimes shut off during operation. Is it possible contacts are to blame?

I know it could be more complex than that.

I have an article about diagnosing cruise issues which i'll read and report back when I solve my problem.

I would imagine there are also some "Output Tests" available in Vag-Com? If so, what might they be?

Default Re: Maybe, just maybe, it's as simple as oxidized contacts on the stalk.

It seems that my experience is similair. In July I bought my '99 A8q. It was a one owner vehicle with 66k on the clock. In the beginning it was hit or miss whether the cruise would set when activated. Over time it would set more consistently and now it is completely normal.

I know of the previous owner and it fits that he wasn't doing a lot of long, highway trips that would use the cruise. So, it seems that my periodic use has "cleaned" and corrected the problem. Who knows. Just my experience.

Best of luck for a cheap or no cost resolution!!

Default Same here, I even took the stalk apart and ....

I'm thinking it might be the switch on the brake in my case, I've even had it working and just quit like reported. Hitting a small bump on the road could be the indicator. In line are the small images from the link.

Default I never had that problem.

If things get too technical, I'm not much help. You have to drag in the big guns like PaulW, tozo, etc.

Default GREAT troubleshooting guide inside

Courtesy of the fine folks from the A4 forum, this should be applicable to the A8, as well.

I plan on running some voltage tests on my system in the coming days to determine where my problem lies.

It's already on their FAQ list: Why don't we add it to ours?<ul><li><a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/a4/msgs/2601924.phtml">Cruise Control Troubleshooting</a></li></ul>

Default When I had the car in the shop for it's transmission ...

... I told them to look into the non-functional high beam switch. Flash-to-pass worked fine but engaging the HI beams did not work.

When they pulled that multi-function assembly, they found parts of it had melted, and replaced the unit.

My cruise control had been non-functional .. I should check and see if it works now, as well as the HI beams ....
