Any suggestions on how to fix?

Default I fear you're experiencing a common Audi problem.
I think the fix is to replace the instrument cluster. :-(

Default have the same issue, but it's intermittent
at times, the date, time, trip odometer, and mileage odometer on the dash would dim or fade to the point where they are barely readable.

fiddled with the dim adjustment button to no avail.

I did notice the same on mine but discovered it was reacting to the exsternal light levels....?
