dealers suck..

just got off the phone with service techs from both town motors and jack daniels which are maybe five miles apart..asked for price for tranny fluid change..towne said 485.00 daniels said 280.00..can they suck enough or what? is there anything i should look for or tell the techs when i hand the keys over?

An independent can do it for less of course, but he'd still have to get the fluid from the dealer.

Be careful! This probably includes the fluid change only. If you want the filter to be changed ( who wouldn't )they will tell you that they have to remove the catalic converter in order to remove the pan. They quoted me for the filter and gasket $135, the fluid $22/Liter ( VW has for $14.60/ Liter ). I don't know what year is your car, but if you follow Paul's instructions, you will be satisfied with the result. It took me 3 hours and less than $200.

I paid about 5 bills for oil / tranny fluid and filter as well as a hose replacement. Sounds like the going rate is what you are getting for the one. The 280 does sound cheap. Id make sure they really know what they are doing.
