Default No, not directly interchangeable ... but yee haw !!! it could be fun ... and some work.

The final drive ratio of the S8 is much more aggressive than the A8. The intermediate gears in the tail housing and the front ring and pinion are different between the two.

So, if you want the aggressive gearing of the S8, you will also need the rear ring and pinion from the S8/S6, I believe the manual tranny S4's rear ring and pinion will work as well.

Audi does some weird stuff with the ratios in the tail housing of the transmission to get the front and rear ring and pinion math to work out.

I e-mailed to Paul the other day, one of my comments was that sooner of later someone would get to try this.

So ... if you decide you don't want to do this, I might be interested in how much you would want for the S8 transmission, or how much the one you found is going for.

Default And this would be the result if you could do it, ...

The table in the lower right shows an A8/S8 Tiptronic with the S8's final drive.

Default What I don't understand is that ...

LOWERING the stall speed reduces the available torque thus making the car more placid and mild. When he says it "pulls better", that is in direct contradiction to what LOWERING the stall speed does, physically.

If you don't use it, I would be interested in buying it

I have not known of a 00-03 trans failing, and since I have a 2000, I am anxious to find out what symptoms did yours exhibit and at what miles?

You will have better acceleration from start, but less torque after.

Default And I forgot to recommend, try all possibily fixes before replacement.

Labor and parts is pretty pricey, I haven't checked the forum to see if you have tried Paul's site for fixes.

http://www.audipages.com/Tech_Articles/auto_transmission.html</a
