Default It is definite less placid now ...

One caveat that I do make is that I have no doubt that 0-60 times are worse with the lowered stall speed.

However, in real-world driving situations the car is much tighter, and therefore feels like it has improved throttle response ... because it does, relative to when the car actually responds.

First and second gear on wet pavement is now dangerous, and I've probably created a car that is undriveable in the winter. But I'll see when I get there.

Many of the benefits apply to the 5V configuration that aggresively locks-up the torque convertor in second gear. My TC is already locked-up in second gear at the point that the higher stall speed benefits the 4V.

A side benefit is that with the lowered stall and Tozo's fluid, my shifts are much quicker. There is not as large of an RPM gap during the shifts with the tighter torque convertor.

Default Another way to put it ...

Jkay and Jack, my apologies. I'm watching the kids today and these postings of mine lack focus.

Here's a simpler way for me to put it -

I've actually only lowered the stall speed by somewhere between 150 and 200 RPM. But, I've moved the response of the torque convertor down lower. It's pumping more fluid at lower RPMs.

So, between 1500 and 3000 RPM the car snaps more to throttle input.

Jkay, your points are valid. The only reason this idea worked out for me is the following, and I did a lot of research before pulling the trigger on the project -

1. Although the 4.2 is a "small" V8, with the variable valve timing and 4 or 5 valve heads, it's torque curve is relatively flat.
2. I haven't pulled my stall speed away from the 4.2's torque peak a great amount. The possibility exists that the engine torque is close to the same between the stall of the original versus the stall of the new.
3. I've gotten back the use of the torque between 1500 and 3000 RPM that the original torque convertor had let fly away. This is similar thinking to why guys with modified turbodiesel V8 pick-ups lower their stall speed.

Default Paul, e-mail me, I would be interested in helping you out.

Realistically, the idea of putting an S8 tranny and rear R and P in my A6 is less of a reality for me than of you trying it. I'd be interested in helping you out with such a project, the expected outcomes intrigue me that much.

Default Re: Difference between a8 2000 and s8 2002 tranny

I have a 2000 A8 and the Tranny would sometimes hit hard going from 3rd to 2nd. There should be no noticable change going through any of the gears.

Thanks
