Do we have a definitive answer on transmission hunting?

I've been watching the board (OK, mostly lurking), and of course I have a hunter, so the question is more than academic. I've read about programming fixes, valve body rebuilds, throttle position sensor modifications. Some say a trans fluid/filter change helped; others indicate that only a total trans rebuild solved the problem. I thought it might be a malfunctioning brake switch; others disabused me of that notion.
Are we having different problems manifesting the same symptoms? Is there a solution that has consistently worked, short of a transmission rebuild/replacement? I hope I don't sound critical; I'm in awe of the time and talent that has been put into this problem. But I'm confused on what to try at this point. I don't want to write a $3500 check if something else reliably works.

A later model transmission Valve Body has absolutly "fixed" the hunting in my 1999. The "Thump" is now quite pronounced however.
I really should adjust the TPS correctly (I have it set so it seldom closes completely, right on the edge) to see if that makes a difference.

shortly after i installed that however i blew my clutch A basket so i had to get a new tranny anyway. I would certainly suggest trying a new TPS and get it Tozoed. If all you suffer from is the "hunt" then that should solve it. A fluid/filter change wouldnt hurt (if you have already changed it in the past...dont mess with it if its OEM...from what i hear problems being to become more prevelant once the factory fluid has been flushed..)
