Default Do you guys have one of these inside your intake air box?

I purchased one of these
http://www.lltek.com/aik_a8_D2.htm
and tried to install it. It's supposed to end up facing down inside the bottom part of the intake box. I have this weird pump looking thing in the bottom of my airbox so there is not enough room for the intake filter. I called the company I purchased the kit from and they said they've sold several and never had an issue. I sent them this pictures of the pump inside the box and they said my car is unusual to have it.
So any of you have this thing in the bottom of your airbox?

Default Re: Yea, site says thru 99 but I called them prior to purchase &...

they said they need to update their site and it would fit my 03 (non facelift) car. They had some 11 guys in 04 cars to purchase it. They told me they have a good friend in a 03 S8 that has this intake on his car and he's in the hospital for something minor and would be out this week. They are going to show him my photos and see if he had this pump and relocated it or just doesn't have it etc. I'll let you know what he says.

Actually it's the secondary air injection pump, facelift models only

Default It's why the facelift A8/S8 doesn't like short trips.

The motor runs extremely rich until the catalytic converters reach operating temperature, which can result in combustion chamber carbon build-up.

From ttuling's informative <a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/a8/msgs/129956.phtml">Post</a>,

"<i>Okay, so where did the carbon come from? Like you, I'd guess that it's not from normal, warmed up running unless there's some part of the combustion chamber that doesn't see much combustion. I suspect its from cold running. Here's where the 5 valve engine may be worse. To warm up the catalysts faster, these engines run extraordinarily rich after a cold start. Richer than is needed just to keep running. Then they use <b>the electric air pump</b> to blow air into the manifold next to each exhaust port, so the exhaust, rich with unburned fuel, afterburns both to reduce emissions and to release heat to warm the catalysts. ... Does this 5V approach make carbon? Yes, lots.</i>"

Default sorry, my bad

late night posting...

the secondary pump is designed to force oxidation of unburn hydrocarbons (think fire) which forces the cats up to temp quickly.... it stops operating when the engine temp is above 55c.

it has it's own air-filter..

Default Re: So, what do you guys think about trying to relocate it?

I'd love to see if I can fit the intake in there.

Default Ive been debating this as well. The pump really cant be moved without extensive work.

However my thought on this is make a flat cover and section off the pump. Modify the upper housing to be dedicated to your new intake. just my $0.02
