Does the U.S.-spec S8 really have a 3.73 final drive ratio? What about engine redline?

2.73 was on the 4.2 models, and I'm hoping 3.73's not just a typo. I thought redline was 7400; am I correct?

The final drive ratio isn't listed in the owner's manual, but 3100 rpm equals 80 mph on the highway, so final drive is a LOT taller than it was on my A8. This puppy could really use a 6th gear! Indicated redline is 7000.

That sounds like a 3.73.

I think it may even be higher than that...
At 100 MPH, I'm turning almost 4 grand!!! (3900 RPM to be exact) Where's that 6 Speed Tip. I've been praying for...?

My '93 Q45 with a 4 speed box turned 3100 RPM at 100 MPH on a 3.54:1 rear-end standard. When I dropped to a 4.11:1 (300ZX ring and pinion gear) I cringed to see 3600 RPM at 100 MPH....! Now I'm turning 3900 on a 5-speed box.

That's where all of the "torque" is coming from: Audi cheated us! 740i is at 321 lb-ft, M5 is at 369 lb-ft and the E55 is at 391 lb-ft!!!

Not to say I'll ever give up my 4 rings... You still can't beat the Quattro up here in the NW wet weather....

Default Cheated? The 4.2 is the smallest engine that you listed, so the others should have more torque...

...and the Audi has more peak torque per liter than either, and about the same as the M5. Anyway, the S8's not for cruising, it's for performance, which means proper gearing for acceleration, and the S8's got it (although, IMO, it needs a lower (numerically higher) 4th gear). That '93 Q45 wasn't nearly as fast as an S8; don't forget that.
