Double glazing and metal layer in the glass bode well for this situation

I got a text from my 17 yr old daughter to pick her up from a service station near a party that had gotten out of hand with fights etc.
Coinedentally it is accross road from the resteraunt where we were having a meal with a friend and when we arrived we saw what is in the [sorry for the phone quality]pic.
By the time we arrived my daughter sent another text to say she had moved on to another party around the block.
We sat outside the party watching drunk teens throw bottles until it got a little freaky.
Half an hour later[after the pic]two 16yr old girls were killed and many injured in the events that followed [see link]
We left about 5 minutes before this carnage took place.
My baby is safe and thankfully sensible enough to know when to leave.

http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/dominionpost/4050138a10.html</a

but lately, with my new born nephew and my god daughter....I've been putting these things into perspective. When I was a teen, there were many reckless things I did, without regard to safety of myself and others. It really hits home now that I'm responsible for other lives. People in this world are absolutely bonkers.
The Virginia Tech tragedy and this sad event. What drives people to this type of behavior that it becomes the only option?
I'm glad your daughter is safe had the sense to get out. Quite frankly, I'm not entirely sure in my youth, if I would have the same sort of judgement.
