when my 00 A8L slows to a stop at after driving a street speeds there is a 'thud' or 'clunk' as the trans makes an abrupt or harsh shift to what I assume is first gear just before the car stops completely. Does this only sometimes.
I am wondering if this is a common idiosyncracy or if I have a problem. Anyone else experience this?

same issue and it was also a 2000. I have driven a bunch of pre facelift A8's and have not felt the same thing. It's very annoying and I would love to figure out what the cause is.. I have been underneath my car and can rotate the driveshaft by hand at the point when it connects to the transmission and can hear the clunk. I also have some play up/down as well. I think the problem is play in the differential/output flange. Paul posted extensive notes on a car he was troubleshooting with same problem within the past two months. Do a search under name and you'll see his reply. I don't recall if that was a 2000 or not. Let me know if you find a fix and I'll do the same...

trannys. had the oil and filter changed last year, but don't recall if it decreased the occurance
what bothers me more is the play when i put in park on an include. parking brake gets a lot of use in those cases

I notice this if I let the TCM decide when to downshift . If I direct the 3 to 2 downshift via tip, it doesn't occur because the TCM has time to disengage the TC in second gear before the shift from 2 to 1 occurs.
Essentially, the TC lockup disengagement and 2 to 1 downshift are being "stuffed together" before you roll to a stop.
But you can Vag-Com log to be certain.

And it will always go into a state of engine braking on a second gear downshift in tip for a 5V, regardless of brake application.
I do have to correct myself on some previous posts, I've discovered on a recent test of an S8 that the S8 waits until third to lockup ... I'm interested in what the RS6 does.
The switch from reg to open can most definitely result in a thunk on a 5V. I can reproduce this effect all day long ... one of the reasons I bought your TC to have it modified :-).
