Drive Line Thumping

Drive Line Thumping
I am trying to compare the problem my 97 A8Q w/DTE transmission (81K miles, oil change/filter at 60K) is having with the hunting/valve body discussion in progress. When coasting, as down hill, above 60 mph it thumps as if going in/out of lockup or a 5/4 shift. The engine RPM goes up and down with the thump. Yesterday, Ingolstadt West took it on the road with VAGCOM. There is no electrical evidence of gear changes and the lockup signal is on steady above about 45 mph. Throttle and other signals related to the transmission are normal. This seems to say that the problem is hydraulic/mechanical. There is no hunting or shift problems under power, just coasting above 60 mph. Does this relate to the problems being discussed and/or does anyone else have this same problem? We haven't opened it up yet. Just watching for now.

Re: Drive Line Thumping
Currently with my A8, the thumping while coasting is the only transmission problem I have, otherwise, everything is functioning normally. I did have thumping and hunting 2 years ago, but a fluid/filter change fixed that. I also recoded the tranny to 00001 which helped a lot. I had no issues until about a couple months ago when the thumping started while coasting.
