Do you mean if you've started the car and step away from it and close the door? No, mine never did (either the 98 or the current S8), but I have to admit I've often wondered if it would.

If you are in a parking lot, get out of your car, lock it....then hit unlock and don't open a door within about 30 seconds, it will relock itself.
It doesn't have to be in a parking lot for that happen....

If a pin switch in the door jamb goes bad, the car will think that the door was never opened (even if you did open it.)
There have been times where I've been in my old Passat, unlocked the car, got it, looked through some CDs, realized I forgot something in the house and opened the door right as the alarm sets itself again.
Scared the crap outta me a few times.
However, if the engine is on the doors will not lock and the alarm will not set.

can be set to lock automaticly when on the move (>10km/hr), and will re-lock is unlocked and no door opened within a minute.
both quite useful, i have se our allroad to automatically lock so we can keep the kids in the car ;-)
