Too much technology is going to tend to get people's heads down in the cockpit instead of down the road. It's bad enough that they're talking on the cell phone and applying makeup and yelling at the brats and reading the paper. We don't need to have them watching movies, too.

I confirmed this last week, and its for the exact reason you mentioned JimR. U.S. makes them disable the ability to play DVDs in the front nav screen because of the distraction, even if the car is at a complete standstill. Given the number of accidents that happen even with hands-free cellphones, I don't want to be driving on the freeway with anyone who has a functioning DVD player within their peripheral vision!

Certainly the DVD player would shut down as soon as the car began to move.
It was more of a gimmicky idea for me, would be nice if you could you pop in a DVD with something violent on it when stuck in a traffic jam.

ability. Look at all the laws we have now to proted the private person from himself. More are added each year. Without having read Gulag Archipeligo, I can only say that I have lived in many countries and had firsthand experience, from which point I speak.
Take care Jim.

This is getting perilously close to off-topic, but I'll opine anyway...
For every driver that dips his head to dial a cell phone and crashes, for every driver that watches a DVD while driving and crashes, for every motorcycle rider that doesn't wear a helmet and crashes,
a) my insurance rates go up to help cover the costs created by these less than brilliant people
b) my taxes may go up to help them pay their medical costs if they do not have insurance and cannot afford to pay, and
c) the cost of services at hospitals will go up if they have to provide uncompensated care.
I have SOME libertarian views, but the thought that everyone should be able to do whatever they want whenever they want without regard to others is simply myopic. If people want to put their own lives at risk, OK by me, but when it puts my life at risk and also forces me to pay for their foolish actions, I welcome the governement's involvement.
There...glad I got that out of my system
