If mine died with a full or half full tank, then I would agree with your analysis. However, My tank was EXTREMELY low which raises the possibility that the fuel being picked up was aerated, or that the pump would suck air, and then overheat and burn out. Your theory was that, regardless of fuel tank level, the pump ran down the battery until the battery was no longer strong enough to turn the pump and that the pump then just sat still buzzing and heating up...toasting itself. Both sound feasible, but given the very low fuel level, I can't say which scenario or a combination of the two, killed it.
It was certainly dead though and seized up good. I suppose I could pull it apart to see if the insides tell the story of how it died.
