Well, I took my 1997 A8 Quattro with 152k miles into the shop to fix an oil leak, and they ruined my engine. The garage put in a claim to their insurance company, and the adjusters want to offer me about $4,100. They estimate that it will be $5,500 to drop in new engine and replace the timing belt.
I have a love-hate relationship with my car. There's nothing like it when I drive up and down I-95 between DC and NJ. However, the repairs cost me a good $3,000 a year with routine and corrective maintenance.
I want to be rational. Should I try to buy back the car and solider on or is it better to cash out and look for another baby (preferably another A8 or at least another Audi)? Any recommendations? FYI, I'm trying to hold down expenses.
HELP!!! I need the collective genius for guidance.

The disclaimer is that I may have some of these facts incorrect due to lack of my technical knowledge.
They were trying to replace a seal down by the oil pan, but when they were trying to start the engine back up, it threw the timing belt. Evidently, there is a zero tolerance for the crankshaft, and the mechanic went too far.

Yes, but it is cheaper for the insurance company to buy me out since it is more expensive to repair it.
That is the way of an insurance company...settle for less if you can.

I would suggest time to go for a post facelift D2. I haven't had much exp with the pre facelifts, but the kinds of problems I see here for them are very different from what I've seen on my 2000 A8.

If the insurance company keeps the car, it's $6,300 in my pocket. If I keep the car, it's $5,000.
I may be taking a commercial break to think about it! Need to decide before 4/2.
Any suggestions on good places to look for a D2?
