Default ask the dealer for the codes

the computer might have stored codes...

otherwise i'd back what randy has said, you might have a leaking fuel pressure regulator, which is allowing fuel to leak back into the tank.

btw, all the motronic knows about is the fuel relay, and the fuel pump. ignition on turns on the fuel pump.

Default Do you mean "hot soak"?

I've never heard of "fuel soak" but maybe you mean the same thing as "hot soak"? I have heard that fuel residue can deposit on the tip of the injector when the engine is shut off, and the injector is subjected to high temperature. This I believe is called "hot soak". Perhaps "fuel soak" is just another name for this?

No, the injectors may be leaking but I have no indication that they are clogged. The car drives very well under all conditions, no problems except the starting problems I have mentioned.

Default Re: ask the dealer for the codes

No codes stored. Thanks for confirming that the fuel pump starts as soon as the ignition is turned on. When turning on the ignition of my old Saab -93 Turbo the fuel pump made enough noise so there was no doubt that it had started, when I do the same thing on the A8 there is no sound at all I can identify as the fuel pump. Must be very quiet!

Default Your fuel pump could be going bad

There has been a few cases of very similar circumstances....it dies, then catches again, then dies again....

Default Re: Engine starting problems

My A8 appears to have a problem transferring fuel from the left hand side of the tank to the right hand side (where the pump is)when the tank is less than 1/3 full. Could this be your problem? Anyone any ideas re the cause of this? Just had new pump, sender units and filter renewed but problem still not fixed.

Default there are actually two tanks

shaped like an upside down "u" with pickups in each. your problem is probably in one of these.

Default Possible but I don't think so

Because my starting problems only occured under special circumstances. But I'm not sure of course, the fuel pump on my Saab 2.3 Turbo -93 died on me at just about this mileage. Now I've had the fuel pressure regulator replaced (and the fuel filter) and we'll see whether I get the same problem again or not. Completely unrelated, but I also had to replace the ventilation fan, evidently it tends to wear out faster on cars with the suncell roof.
