Ok,I'm doing an engine swap on my 1999 A8, I'm finally getting the time to do this. I posted a month or so ago when my timing belt broke (leaking cam seal) I did the leakdown and it was hurt. Well I found an engine and it will be here Tuesday. I'm gonna change cam seals on the new one, crank seal, Timing belt, tensioner, pulleys etc. Anyway, does anyone have a step-by-step guide for an engine swap for a 32V D2??? Like a write up PaulW has for the timing belt swap? Any help would be appreciated!!! Aron

Has anyone ever swapped out an engine in one of these?? Any tips, tricks, anything that can help?? Does the transmission have to come out at the same time? Anything that anyone can chime in and help would be much appreciated!

I would disconnect all the wiring on the top, remove the exhaust, drive shaft, axles and lower the engine/tranny/sub-frame together. Pull the tranny off (after removing the starter and unbolting the TC from the flex plate).

So I guess someone also envisioned a traditional pull from the top affair. The only engines I have ever pulled from the bottom have been VW and Porsche air-cooled because that was how you did it, just with a floor jack. I've never had a lift.
Suspect they go in from below during assembly at the factory, or, rather, they drop the shell over the powertrain. Perhaps someone has visited and seen it.

That's how I did it when I pulled the engine out to pull and redo the heads. Take the 4 big subframe bolts off and disconnect the exhaust from the h pipe back, leaving the curved tubes connected to the headers, diconnect the rear drive shaft from the tranny and that is about it. The wiring harnesses are easy to disconnect. Change o2 sensors while your at it.

I'd guess the factory installation of engine and tranny occurs before the fenders, hood, core support and radiator/AC condenser go on.
