I removed the holder for a US-stype front plate to reveal a space for a Euro plate, but it doesn't look complete. It looks like there should be another holder in place for the euro-style plate. Do I need to order anything else?

Three tabs across the top. I had the bumper off to examine some damage to my headlamp washers (long story). There are three slots along the top of the bumper where you can push in and it will pop out the top tabs. The tabs at the side don't matter, and will pop out and up.

On my car (MY 2001) there are a couple of threaded holes behind the cover (which you said you just removed). I used to have a europlate holder attached to those two holes, and the plate was secured in the holder. The problem with that was that it looked kinda dorky: the plate holder is perfectly flat, while the front bumper is slightly curved. So the left and right edges of the plate stuck out away from the bumper. To fix it, I just removed the europlate holder, drilled a couple holes in the plate, bent the plate very slightly to match the curve of the bumper, and then attached the plate to the threaded holes with a couple of hex-head bolts. You can see the pic below in my sig, and there might be more pics in my pic poster. I can take a close-up pic if you want to see the quality of the fit.

<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/38531/s8_front_plate.jpg"></center><p>Like I said, my car's model year is 2001, so I don't know if the front bumper is the same as your car (MY1997, right?)
Above is a pic of the plate on my S8. There are many places to get fake euro plates (which I've found to be much easier to get, much higher quality, and cheaper than real expired europlates). Here are a few places to check out:

I've had terrible experiences with Frank in Germany (eurotags@aol.com)..he's the guy selling real plates on eBay. I would highly recommend avoiding this guy.

Haven't you ever seen those silly airbrushed license plates at truck stops and gas stations, with a scene of porpoises jumping, or a panther face, or some dumb saying on it? People put those on their front bumpers all the time, in states where front plates aren't required.
There's nothing illegal (in my state, anyway) about mounting a fake plate on the front of your car...as long as it's not obscene, I guess.
Your state may vary...
