My relay panel did not have a relay in the position forth from left. This panel is just a patch panel, so they could be put anywhere, though I suspect in the interests of easy diagnostocs, the positions reflect the relays used.
None of my relays had "Servotronic" on them. So I've got all the numbers I could off all of them. Cue a mess of stuff for you lot to untanlge

Firstly my car.
Its a A8 4.2 1998 UK model.
THE RELAY PANEL
This was the upper of the 2 relay panels.
This was basically a patch panel in a grid of 5x3
Dig 1.
This is looking down from above, top of diagram is the side of the relay nearest the engine when in situ.

The exercise turned out to be more extensive than I thought- the differences between the LHD and RHD models must run deeper than I had expected! You went way beyond the call of duty to get this information, and I really appreciate it. Based on the description you have given of the relay panel in your UK A8, the location of the servotronic module may be somewhere else ;(. (This 3 X 5 relay panel has 5 realys/modules in my US spec A8- see diagrams above.) If one of these part numbers IS the servotronic relay, then since none of these components have the same part number as my 1997 A8, it is likely OK to assume that the UK and USA servotronic modules ARE different. Based on the Audi part numbering system, the servotronic module in Stumbo's car is either the 4A0 907 440 (#1 position), or 4DO 907 131 (#2 position). Checking the online parts suppliers, the 4DO 907 131 part sells for only $15, which indicates to me that this is not the Servotronic controller. The 4A0 907 440 sells for $40, which is also less than I would expect this module to sell for. The 4D0 907 307 from my US A8 sells for over $75. Bottom line is that I'm not sure that any of the modules Stumbo found is the Servotronic module. Without a master part number listing by vehicle, I can't tell the difference between these part numbers. In the diagrams above for the US A8, the servotronic module is in location 12, with the pin-outs shown below. Any one have any great ideas?
Thanks again Stumbo!

Ok.
Your (image) diagrams are so much better on the eye, after all my dicking about with mine![Smile](https://www.audiworld.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Using your diagram, the servotronic relay is a single-unit size relay (if just in 12) not one of the bigger dual-unit size relays.
Presuming the European relay is the same size as the Us relay, this narrows it down to the 2 small relays on my panel (ignoring for the moment, that it may be somewhere else). This would mean 2 & 3 (not 1).
I admit I'm ignoring part number conventions.
Of these two, 3 had a funny little S symbol on it.
Image the following two symobols overlapping:

And thats what it looked like - could this mean Servotronic ?

According to the following part number break down
http://www.partsdepartment.co.uk/Parts/partno.htm
Simplistically:
The first 3 imply the model.
The next three imply the type of part
The last three imply the actual part number
So your 4D0 907 307 may match my 4DO 907 131
Ok I don't know enough yet.

Found this:
>: Yes, we can have them auto or 6-speed. Very, very quick, but somehow a
>: little unsporting - Audis still have a certain deadness about their
>: response to steering inputs. A fine car for someone looking for an all-
>: weather motorway express.

>Yes, I think the fault may lie with the Servotronic system.
|Servotronic is awful. I believe it is not even |offered any more in UK on
|the A8. I drove a V8 with it and thought it was |appalling. But even the
|non-Servotronic cars lack a little in steering |feel, compared to say a
|(UK-spec) Golf or Corrado VR6. I haven't driven |the latest 7-series BMW,
|but the previous generation 7 was a better |driver's car than the Audi,
|IMHO. When the bad weather arrives, though, I |know which car I'd rather
|be in, and it doesn't have a blue and white |roundel badge on it :-)

What we really need is an European Audi parts manager! I had found the partsdepartment.co.uk description of the part numbers, but I also discovered that ALL of the control modules have the 907 part number designation. Unfortunately there is no way to tell if the 4D0 907 part number from Stumbo's car is a servotronic module or one of several other modules. Without a parts list to look these things up on, I'm at a loss. At this point I may try to disable (unplug) the servotronic control module and see what that does. The alldata database indicates that if the control module is not functional, then the steering will be difficult at parking lot speeds, and overly light at highway speeds. We'll see......

It remains a cost option on later A8 and S8's.
I'm pleased with mine, nice and light at parking and weights up as soon as you get moving. Once on the move I could not tell the difference with one without the servotronic.

.
The steering is nice and light in the parking lot, but it seems to stay very light at any speed with my S8.
If anything, power steering assist seems to be attached to a lateral g sensor rather than the speedometer. The steering definitely starts to feel just fine one you're at 0.7-0.8 g (just guessing at numbers here), but perhaps this is the result of front suspension geometry more than anything else.
Once someone confirms the identity of the offending relay, I'm looking forward to pulling it, especially on the track.

I will try to find the servotronic module on mine today, and keep you posted. Haven't seen the A8 much lately, it's confiscated by my wife since I only ride my new Italian motorcycle these days. :-)
