Default Everyone who has changed their transmission filter- how much junk was on the magnets?

When I changed my tranny filter, I (of course) completely cleaned the transmission oil pan and the 4 magnets that reside there. All 4 of the magnets had a slimy coating of extremely fine metallic particles, my guess would be around 1 mm thick. What has been everyone else's experience with this? I think that this would be another good data point for our transmission concerns/analysis. PaulW has provided invaluable data for the fluid analysis, let's add this to the database.

Default On the A6 about the same,

but there were 6 magnets. I'll be doing the A8 soon, perhaps this weekend.

Default trans fluid, filter change

Hello,

I plan on changing the trans fluid and filter tomorrow (3/18) night.
I will take notes and pictures.

Anything special people want to me to look for / record?

Default Don't underestimate the volume of fluid you will need........

Get at least 8 liters of fluid- When I changed my filter I let the vehicle sit with the pan off for 2-3 hours, during which time it continued to slowly drain. When I installed the new filter and reinstalled the pan, it took 4 liters just to fill the pan before starting the engine and letting it warm up a little. After pumping in the fluid with the engine running and shifting through the gears, I ended up using 7.25 liters of fluid! Final fill was at a tranny fluid temp of 35 C. I had purchased 6 liters of fluid initially, but I thought about it and realized that it would be better to have too much (that could be used in another 30K miles) than run short in mid-fill. Lucky thing!

Good point!

The manual states ~4 liters. I bought 6 to be sure to have
enough extra. At $14 / bottle, I didn't want to get too much.
I guess I will buy some more.

Thanks,
Barry

Default Take a bunch of pictures

Including the old filter and new filter, plus pics of inside the transmission.

If you can then burn them on a CD and mail them to me, we will have the procedure for audipages.

Thanks!

I agree with you. I needed 7 liters to fill mine also. Bought 5 and had to go back to get 2 more. It is much easier to get 7 to start with and return them if you don't need them.
