From my post: "Burning Smell. There's a faint burning smell after the car's been driven for a while. I gotta think it's an oil leak of some kind. Boy, I'm glad I paid a mechanic to review the car."
1999 A8 4.2, by the way.
I was sure it was the valve cover gaskets, or even the rear transmission seal that was causing the smell. I don't think so now! [Good--this is a cheaper fix.]
Well, ya think this might be the cause?: :-/

I live in SoCal, but I'd love to drive up to the mechanic who inspected this car in NorCal and shove this hose down his throat. A$$hole.
It appears to be some sort of overflow. I've got a call into Audi parts right now. Anybody know what this hose is?

Here's the original post . . .

For about $5. I know I saved it somewhere, but can't find it now.
Who was it?
They bought a replacement at a local parts store for $5. It's just a breather hose.

this. I doubt he even removed the covers. Too bad I already paid that Visa bill.
Anyhow, the Audi dealer wants $33 for the part, and it's something I'll have to wait until tomorrow for.
I'll check the archives for the part you're talking about. If you happen to find the post, please let me know!

There are actually 3 of these breather hoses that disintigrate over time. A second is at the back of the engine and looks impossible to replace. I have no idea where the third is(lower passenger side somewhere). On my '97 the rear was toast and the front felt like mush. I could put my fingernail through it. If the front is bad, its possible the other two are shot. My dealer originally quoted me 1.5 hours labor to replace all 3 so i said do it. The hoses cost @$100 for the three, but they must have fu*&ed up on the labor quote. That rear hose is a chore just to look at.

engine cover/valence and there was oil (& grime) everywhere. It's possible that the front hose caused this, but I suspect the rear hoses might be "hosed" as well.
I'll update w/my findings.
