Default Follow up from yesterday's creeking control arms...

For those that didn't catch it yesterday...

My passenger side suspension sounds and feels very loose when going slow and hitting a bump or driveway ramp. Also, after 30 minutes of driving, the suspension creeks consistently.

Stealer indicates that the issue causing my symptoms, is the links to the control arms, rather than the control arms or joints themselves. Does that sound like a possible cause, or are they full of #@*&^%?

In order to fix the links, which I'm not sure I understand what they are (perhaps similar to the inner tie rod ends?), what needs to be done. Is it DIY without a lift? While this is being done, should I do other things like replace the arms and/or suspension. Grrrrr! Why can't it be a simple control arm recall.

Default IF it is the links (I've never seen a really bad one) it is an easy replacement.

No lift needed, just a floor jack and jack stands.

Default Do you mean the sway bar link?

This connects the straight control arm to the sway bar....the 97's had little joints on them, I think the 98 and later were through bolted as you see here.

I don't think it could cause your noise though....it's usually the bushings in the control arm.

Hey, how did that hose clamp get in that picture!!!!

Default If they are not visibly shot, spray them with silicone, if the creaking

stops or changes quality, that is probably the problem. Check tightness of fasteners, too.

Default Re: Just developed the same problem on my 99

I've just noticed a creeking sound coming out of the left front. When going slow and turning or on a little grade I get the creeking sound out of the front. I can also get a creeking sound(sometimes) by pushing down on the front corner of the car as one would do to check the rebound of the shocks. Any thoughts among the experts out there. I have a delema, would like to take it back to the Audi dealer if it is a control arm and get it covered. If not I wouldn't trust their opinion as they always manage to get a $500.00 bill out of me when ever I take it to them. I think they must have a policy that $500.00 is their minimum bill no matter what.

Default The link Stealer was referring to was the upper control arms having play in the ball joints.

what would you expect to pay for this work, and how hard is the job if I wanted to do it?

Default Report....

Dealer says control arm is kaput. I was just in 2 months ago for the recall and there was no problem then. Sounds like the control arm is either just fine or broken, no in between.
