garage hack update

So, I started along last night getting the switch wired up to the garage remote. Can't go any further while I'm waiting for the stereo removal tools to arrive. I couldn't use the dremel tool because there wasn't enough room so I de-soldered the 4 legs. Wired up the two leads and tested. Seems to work (I held the wires to pins 5 and 6), but the light on the remote which should only come on momentarily, stays lit all the time, even with the switch not connected. Any idea why ? Obviously the battery won't last too long with this setup BUT I had an idea...since it's a 12v battery, why not just connect my 12v leads for the backlighting to the battery terminals on the remote ? Solves my light issue in a roundabout way and would eliminate having to take the radio out at some point to change the battery.. Good idea ?

If it is, no problem. But unless you have multiple batteries in series, you probably don't have a 12 VDC circuit. Maybe a 4 or 6 volt circuit.

Yes, I double checked, it's a single 12v
battery. Genie remote that I got at Home Depot.
Might be worth getting one for this project.
Still not sure why the light is staying on but
if I hardwire the remote I won't worry about it.

I'm pretty sure they're on only when the headlights lights are on.
You'll need to find some "on when ignition is on" power somewhere, to get rid of the need for a battery in the garage remote. Or at least that's what I'd do, to power the opener.
On the light on the garage door remote staying lit - what switch did you buy? One of the reasons I used a sunshade switch was that it was a momentary contact, push to close, normally open switch. Perfect for garage door duty.

I got the shade switch for my year (2000) and the part # is the same but the last letter is different (A instead of B or vice versa). Good point on the 12v source, I'll have to tap into something else. In regards to the light, I don't see how I could have done this wrong as it does work. No polarity issues with the hookup to pins 5 and 6 right ?

That's what I figured. I'll do some more
testing and if I can't figure it out, I'll
just wire to 12v source and let the light stay on.
