Gas Mileage
#13
From the posts below it seems as if most A8ers are using the
dash display mileage computed by the car. I think the most accurate way is to consistently fill up the tank and divide miles driven by gallons used. Over time that should give an accurate picture. I only get 10mpg in San Francisco city driving. The only consistent long highway trips have been to Lake Tahoe at 17-18mpg, and may not be a fair test due to the up and down driving in the mountains. I love the car (2001 A8L), but wonder if I should be getting better mileage. Would any malfunctions causing fuel inefficiency show up with the MIL, or check engine light?

I agree--use the fill-up and count miles method
The dash display is waaaay optimistic.
I used to average 19.2mpg, but recently started adding toluene to the tank to increase octane. The car now runs really really well (like an even-more-scalded cat!) but since the engine is now able to pump more air it's also using more gas...the gas mileage has dropped to about 17.5mpg.
I do a lot of highway driving, and the car stays above 5000ft. elevation, so for people who do some city driving at sealevel, 10mpg sounds reasonable to me for these cars.
