Is the grass really greener on the other side(s)?
I read so many threads about problems with our A8, majorities were transmission and dealer services. I've seen my friends mercedes & bmw transmissions need rebuilding too.
My father's friends' Lexuses services cost them arms and legs also, ok, they got loaners to drive while theirs are in service.
They do have the shares of problems, here and there.
The old ones with high mileages like most of us here share many problems also (100k+).
I know one thing after owning my A8 (117k+) for more a year and 11k miles later, I had no problem what so ever. I think I was lucky or the last owner kept it well or the car was actually built well, whatever it is, I think it's best if we can service the car ourselves or at least have a trusted mech for our cars. To me the less you touch the car, the longer it will last. "if it works, don't fix it" like my uncle would say.
I noticed most of A8 transmissions last about 60-70k, my car trannie was replaced @ 68k. If we buy an A8, within this range, put away 4k to rebuild it in the future. Besides this problem, everything else to me is great. When we bid for some A8, just discount 4-8k for the trannie... :-)
Just my opinion as an A8 owner.
Cheers,

Truth be told, the A8 is a far more reliable vehicle than the A4/A6--and...
..the costs to service it are no higher than the lower models', really. Overall, the A8 is one of the most reliable vehicles I have ever owned! There, I said it. In particular that engine is a jewel. Too bad the transmission is a dog.

Keep in mind that most people that use message boards and post threads........

Do it because they have a problem with the car of some kind. Very few people use these boards to post threads about a problem free car. These boards are like the news channels, they only report the bad news. So whenever you read a thread about a particular problem, it may only affect a very small percentile of the cars. I own two A8, and other than regular maintenance they have both been very good cars for the money. That said, a used A8, works excellent for a "do it yourself" guy, but poorly for someone who have to take it to the dealer for service and repairs. My 2 cents

Usualy I buy a car every other year. In less than two years....
I've spent more money on my A8, than all my other cars combined. It was on the tow truck 3 times. None of my other cars had to be towed (except my other Audi 94' 100 ). I always buy used cars with at least 70K miles. My first car in the US was a 89'Toyota Celica with 110K ( $2400 ). I sold it 3 years later with 145K ( $1500 ). I bought 4 tires and a few viper blades. I love my A8, but I would never buy another German car with automatic tranny.

Thanks, I would think that you are a little bias towards the silver one, he he, I'm still undecided.
Here are a few more.

what makes you say that :) I have to say the silver looks very rich.. Does your wife drive one?
Or are you lucky and have both for yourself? My wife drove mine one up the driveway and she says it has to much power.. She also is afraid I will yell at her (which I never would do, just incase her father reads this) if she ever hit a pot hole or god forbid had a accident.. I keep telling her it is onlhy a car and she is more important then a car.. But for some reason she does not believe me. Am I that shallow? HELL YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL
