Here is a picture of JasonS8 with H&R's installed, lowers the S8 20mm, and the A8 40mm. Final height is adjustable in front, but don't know about rear.

Above is a set of H&R's from a S4 that was being sold used on ebay, I'm sure the A8 set looks very similiar.
For some time now I've been wanting to lower my suspension. After looking at a few options, it appears there is one way to do it right and do it the first time by using a H&R coilover setup.
However, the coilovers are $1,650 everywhere you look, but I found a distributor who will sell them for $1,325 (plus shipping) a set if we have five or more buyers. If not, I have been quoted $1,410 (inlcuded shipping) for a purchase of one set.
I've asked many people who have this package and have heard all sorts of things including the following A8 owner when asking about installing H&R's versus installing just a set of coils from another manufacturer:
"The ride quality was not compromised what so ever. I drive it long distance only and it rides even better then the stock. Its firmer yes, but not hard. It handles like you can not believe and looks fantastic.
Forget swamping springs only. I tried the same route on my 1997 Porsche twin turbo. It was less money, but compromised the ride quality due to the shocks not being set-up for shorter travel. I also went with $300 Eibach springs, ended up with a H&R coil-over in it as well. What a difference. The shorter springs gave the "look", but defiantly not the ride. And you want to drive it everyday."
If you do a search of "coilovers" in the A8/S8 forum, you'll find that everybody loves them, the car handles like a dream and it rides more firm but nothing harsh.
I'd like to put together a group buy for these shocks. I will put together everybody's name who is interested, you would be responsible for paying the distributor when the time comes (I am finding out final details of what form of payment he will take, delivery, shipping costs).
You'll get four H&R coilovers, I believe they are really easy to install or just bring them somewhere to have them installed.
You'll need to get your car aligned afterwards because it does change the set up of your car. I would have the Audi dealer do it, I just got a coupon for a $99 alignment.
Cost: $1,325 plus shipping.
Please email me if you are interested.

The A8/S8 has spearate shock and spring rear, so there are no coil-over solution for the rear, at least not that I know of (I have been investigating quite a bit). So the rear set up is not as pictured, it is a separate spring and shock, not height adjustable.
Rear lowering varies a bit between the vendors, as far as I remember H&R claims 45mm, KW says 55mm (or was it the other way around?). Anyway, IMHO 40-45 would be sufficient rear, more than that is a bit over the top for my taste. And it would force you to lower the front as much as 60mm, since it needs to sit about 10mm lower than rear to look good. 60mm is a lot, but then again, you could build a nice house between the tire and the wheel arc on a stock one.... :-)
I believe the perfect setup is 40 rear and 50 front, but the coil-over kits will force you to go a bit lower. That is what has stopped me from doing it so far, I'm afraid it will be to low.
On the other hand, the ones I have talked to who has done this is very pleased, so I guess it's ok. I'll probably do it myself.

From the H&R website (http://www.hrsprings.com/fcgi-bin/query.fcgi/site/scripts/suspensionquery.cfg), the information provided for Stage 4 coilovers for the A8 indicates that the rear setup is NOT adjustable height (separate spring and shock) and has a fixed hight decrease of 1.25". The front IS adjustable for height reduction, from 1.5" to 2.25". These specs should put your concerns to rest, Kjell, and I think that the amount of lowering offered is close to ideal. The replacement of these items is not trivial, so I would recommend that anyone who isn't an accomplished mechanic take their car in for the replacement.

I am interested in lowering my car, and I too have heard that H&R coilovers are the best way to go. I do have a few concerns however. Does anyone know....Will a dealer do the install? If a dealer does not do the install, does it void any warranties on the car? (mine is a 2000 a8L, still under warranty) What does it cost for installation?
Thanks!
Thanks!

...and I would have it aligned at the dealer too. I imagine an Audi dealership would charge $400 for installation (four hours) plus the alignment, but yours might be covered under your maintenance program.
I can't believe it voids warranties on the car unless the system somehow effects another system that causes it to fail because it was lowered. But I doubt that would happen.
I would just call the service department and ask.
If you get a pair, we're up to three buyers!

Usually than means even L/R weight as measured at the wheels, but when racing, coilovers will let you alter that to compensate for some track or car condition.
