My 98 is in right now - same issues, same mileage. Service done 3 weeks ago, thumping began. Fluid level has checked out fine - dealer can't see anything wrong with trans.........doing a test drive to induce thump as I type. I did the service based on preventitive maintenance, never had a problem whatsoever.

Did your thumping become more frequent?

Something is not quite right obviously - I don't feel like buying a new tranny - what does the board advise?

Default Drive it and see what happens

My tranny use to do the thump when the car turned probably 60K miles, it got worse and worse, had the transmission squeal....then changed the fluid and filter after the dealer told me nothing wrong with the tranny....

Now it's smoother than it's ever been and it took sometime to get like this.

I would just drive it.....see what happens.

This is too bad, do you think it is related to the fluid/filter change?

Got to be related to the change, but maybe it just needs time to cycle through or get dirty - however as I bought an additional tranny filter kit and still have 5 quarts I'm tempted to do another change - or then again maybe not.....

But the dealer reports they can't find the klunk and all is well and operating as it should. (Perhaps they added another 2 quarts of fluid without telling me.......)

Will post again when I pick up the car tomorrow night, fingers crossed.....

Default No consolation, but I had the opposite experience.

At ~30k miles, 5-4 or 5-3 kickdowns were getting rather harsh ... the thump? The tranny fluid and filter were changed at 33k miles, and now the tranny shifts like new, as smooth as silk.

Sorry, I have no idea what a transmission replacement would cost.

Default Had mine changed also @ 60K ....

I waited and watched, took over 3 hrs.(had to wait for it to cool off) but I wanted to see the fluid and pan after seeing some bad pictures on the forum. Old fluid looked light brown and pan was relatively clean of metal shavings etc. Made sure they used Audi fluid and watched to learn the procedure for next time. It was worth it to know the statis of old fluid. Preventive maintenance is the "name of the game" if you plan to keep your Audi.

Default Never really noticed it ,as the last 2 months driving....

in Atlanta was all on city streets, never really got out of 4th with TIP or Auto. No driving on GA400 (State Road called "The Alpharetta Autobahn - between 10AM&10:15AM & 2PM & 2:30PM & on weekends ) except to go to dealer. Trips to beach in Jeep Grand Cherokee. Then started to hear that "whining noise" and JimR finally heard it Saturday AM. He thought it mght be CV joint/boot issue. Dealer says the tranny needs replaced, alot of metal shavings in fluid. Let's see, 2 more tranny fluid changes would cost around $500 or more.

I guys, just purchased 00 A8 3.7 with 65k. Having belt and 'tranny' fluid changed at moment, no problems yet apart from a very slight whine both under load and over run. Getting ALL fluids changed to see if it goes. Seems to coming from front O/side (thats right side here in the UK) Lok forward to your comments and the outcome of BIGTHISTLES experience. This site is really great, but now a bit worried about my 'tranny'
