I started drove down the street to the store and then no start.
I cranked for about 10 seconds, I shut off and then started right up.
It's almost as if there was no fuel.
If I shut down and then start it immediately it'll start. If I let it sit for a short while, no start.
I have to crank, stop and then start.
Ran VAG-COM, no faults found.

I know I've said this before to some other post and have been wrong, but it just screams fuel pressure regulator to me. I had the exact same symptoms on a 2000 Chevy Silverado and that was indeed the culprit. There is a way to clean it believe it or not. You can remove the FPR, pull out the nylon mesh screen and blast it out with brake cleaner. Then use a little silicone grease around the o-ring seal, slap it back together and reinstall.
However, you may want to see what others chime in with first before messing with that thing.

Now that you mention it, I did have similar issues with my V8 quattro. I guess that's a good place to start.
It wouldn't hurt to clean it if that's the culprit or not.
Thanks.

to the relay (but I come up with wacky theories). Otherwise it could be the dreaded fuel pump failure. Have you changed your fuel filter?

Don't know about this range of V8s, but the fuel pressure regulator on the first Audi v8s were a routine failure item that would result in the system losing pressure when not used for a time--like overnight--so that you had to crank the starter twice or for an extended period to get fuel into a cylinder so it could start. I don't know what "cleaning" it out would do.
