Default has anyone TRIED to replace the clock/date on the cluster ?

I'm thinking if I get another cluster, even if it's broken, maybe I can take it apart and swap the LED parts that display the clock and date.

Any thoughts ?

Default

If you were really handy with electronics, you may be able to replace just the LEDs

Default for $1,200 I might become that handy ! Do you think they are individual LEDS or a little cluster on

on a board that I could swap out ? My other car was acting a little funny during the summer so this appears to be a chronic problem.

I might try and get a cheap/damaged cluster to go to school on.

Default The clocks are 7 panel LED displays. Not the dot matrix ones on the center display. They should be

like any other 7 panel LED. You should almost be able to find a generic replacement LED panel with the same specs and solder the leads back in.

Default I just got a thought. That should be the same clock panel as any other Audi model right?

I think the older models didn't have the date function. But maybe a newer B5 A4 model will be cheaper? More of them in junk yards. Find one with a non functioning cluster to scavenge?

Default It is a dot matrix (2000 onward) and seems VW/Audi specific

I just ran the segment test on a 2001 and the whole rectangle lights up in dots. The "miles" legend, itself not made of dots, appears be surrounded by dots, so there's some kind of custom masking. Maybe they're LCDs over an LED backlight? (Do you have individually dead pixels, or blotches of darkness affecting regions of the display? If the latter, that would suggest failed LED backlighting.)

So anyway, the pixels seem to be VW/Audi specific, may or may not be A8 specific, but the backlighting could be generic LEDs. No idea how hard any of these is to change.

Default I'll have to look closer, I think it might be the backlighting. It looks ok when cold and then turns

almost all black after about 30 mins.

Default There was a post in the S4 forum that suggested if you add an "X" to the end of the Part #

it is a refurb part and is half the price. I have not confirmed this and as a matter of fact forgot to do so today at the dealer.

I also have this problem, and am debating wether or not to get it fixed by my warrenty company. That bill will end up being another 2k by the time they install and reprogram the new cluster.

Default

I'll be interested to hear what you find. Hopefully a loose plug or solder joint
