My 2000 A8 would not start.
Turned over but sounded fuel starved.
VAG says:
1 Fault Found:
16706 - Engine Speed Sensor (G28): No Signal
P0322 - 35-00 - -
Pulled the sensor out from transmission. (See #7 in pic)

Cleaned it off with shop towel and MAF cleaner.
Put it back in. Car starts right up - no code.
The tip is magnetic and picks up stuff. Mine was dirty for sure.
If the ECU can't read that the engine is turning over, i.e. engine speed sensor, it won't put fuel at injectors and car sounds like bad fuel pump or spark plugs.
Seem like some may have unnecessarily replaced fuel pump/filter, spark plugs, or mistaken this for an immobilizer/key/cluster issue when all they needed to do was clean off a rubber and metal tipped sensor and screw its one hex bolt back into its hole in the bell housing area.
As always get VAG or have someone pull codes.
Don't replace this part until you try cleaning it first.
It really shouldn't wear out but it does get dirty.

If you scroll up a few messages, post #17, there is a diagram that is pretty clear. Shows the sensor by the trans ID tag.
Also it's #7 in the pic linked from Audipages, by the green trans ID tag.
