Default Help! ABS light / codes / used module / dealer= I AM THROWING $ AWAY.

Hey gang- I really need some help here...

This has been an issue I have been working on for over 6 months. Here are the details.

For one reason or another,my 1997 A8 Quattro's ABS and BRAKE lights (the yellow and red lights next to each other) came on so

1) I took a look on this site. I cleaned all ABS sensors, and even replaced
2) Lights still on.
3) Very frustrated, I took the car to the dealer. They told me the ABS control module had gone bad after diagnosisng the probelm for 3 hours. ($270). They told me a new computer would cost $2,400.00
4) I purchased a used control module from an A4 (same part number!)
5) Plugged it in, lights still on.
6) Called dealer, they said it would need tobe recoded to my car (only their computers can recode)
7) Took it to the dealer, they could not recode, said it was a fauly used module ($90 charge).
8) I returned the part, and received another used module from another A4.
9) Took it back to the dealer. New module could not be recoded. ($90 charge)

So here I am. Any ideas???? Please help. I am throwing money away at this point.

Default assuming the part # is the same then recode should be easy

Amazed at diagnostic charge for oem module as the code they pulled would have clearly told them if it was dead or just a wire.
I have emailed you the diag procedure
Could it be a fault with the cluster???

does the ABS work even though the light is on or is it really disabled?

Default How does the lights come on?

Are they not on, then when you turn your car on, they come on during the systems check?

Does your wheels lock up? (hence ABS disabled)

Does ABS work, but the lights are permanently on? (maybe faulty cluster)

Have you tried testing the wire for continuity? The ABS sensor wires are brittle and break sometimes inside the wire cover. But this would give you an intermitten ABS error code. Find someone with a VAG COM in your area for chrissakes! Your diagnostics charges so far would have bought you your own "Audi Computer" (biggest BS ever!)

Check out: www.Audipages.com for diagnostics<ul><li><a href="http://www.steve-hall.com/cgi-bin/VAG-Locator.pl">VAG COM LOCATOR</a></li></ul>

Default FIX

Same thing happened to me. Aftre a lot of digging there is a FUSE in the trunk for the ABS pump that had blown. I think it was a 20amp. Replaced and it's been fine ever since.

Default I have the same problem

I've had to clean the sensors about every 9 months but lately the cleaning doesn't help. The car does an ABS shutter as soon as I start the car and touch the brakes causing the abs/brake lights to come on and alarm sound. I can also hear the control unit whine prior to the ABS being disabled. The VAG code implies it's the control unit but I'm going to have my mechanic verify the wiring first since some on this site have found a short in the sensor wire.

And you will never be sorry if you buy the VAG product to pull your own codes.

Default with me it was the wire to the ABS sensor.

With me it was the wire to the ABS sensor. Dealer did found it necessary to swap both sensor and connecting wire. Never had the problem again.

Quietly awaiting the other one to go faulty.
