Default Sure, easy. Your Neutral Safety switch is on it's way out. Run the ...

... shifter back and forth a few times and it'll start fine.

Default Here, but you might just have to adjust is not change it.

First put your car in N and try to start it. If it starts, then you know it is just a cable alignment problem. Put your car in park and loosen the two cable adjuster bolts to relieve tension from the cable.
If it doesn't start in neutral, then check the ignition switch. <img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/80919/5hp24a.jpg"><ul><li><a href="http://www.audipages.com/Tech_Articles/auto_transmission/f125switchreplace.html">http://www.audipages.com/Tech_Articles/auto_transmission/f125switchreplace.html</a</li></ul>

Default No, it's not the fuel pump.

He said the engine is not turning over, not that it's turning over and not starting. It's the neutral safety or his battery is very weak.

Of course Tozo raises a good point about the ignition switch.

I'm still betting on "move shifter around, and it starts fine."

Default I wrote 2 years ago - 99% it's bad connection of cables from bat to starter.

Common problem for A8.

If you take out front right wheel, you can see small box with cover. It is connection. Cooper wire connect with aluminium body. Rust to green powder very quickly.
