Default Try to clean it. You need a 5mm Allen wrench.

It is on the driver's side of the tranny above the axle.<ul><li><a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/95-06-VW-Passat-Jetta-Golf-AUDI-Crank-Reference-Sensor_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33557QQihZ020QQi temZ300162242140QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW">it looks like this</a></li></ul>

Default It's listed as an inductive sender and the Bentley calls it an engine speed rpm sensor.

It's part #077905381E.<ul><li><a href="http://www.worldimpex.com/parts/genuine-part-hallsender_117176.html">G28</a></li></ul>

Default I know you had transmission work done.

When they put your tranny back, they might not put the sensor wire connector back to the clip and now it is touching the exhaust (it happened to me in California). Reach down behind the engine (driver's side) and look for a gray wire connector with 3 wires. It hat is your problem just pull the wires apart put some electrical tape on them and wire tie it away from the exhaust.

Default RockAuto has great prices.

I've bought TPS from them for $112.<ul><li><a href="http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/raframecatalog.php">http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/raframecatalog.php</a</li></ul>

Default took sensor out tonight found other end of the harness(plug) thanks Tozo

and clean them still have the issue. nothing touching any hot spots like exhaust. So wed the new sensor is coming but the issue is getting worse not happening more then twice a day now not starting. I got the new upper control arms on so my clunking is gone now.
