I upgraded from a Jetta and I am already in love, though I expect it to be a tempermental relationship. It's got 93,000 miles on it, no leaks and even the power headrests are working. However, it's overdue for a timing belt, and I am thinking of taking that project on myself in a couple weeks. (Though pricing the cam locks and flywheel wrench is enough to give me second thoughts). Also looking to get some new rims and tires. There are 16 inch rims with Blizzaks on the car now (should anyone want those, they wont be much use here in Va). Thinking of going to the new style A8 rims in 18 inches, with either Pirelli's or Michelin pilots. I also read that the transmissions on these cars can require rebuilding as soon as 100000 miles. It goes into gear and shifts smoothly, though sometimes, when I come to a stop it takes a moment to shift down. Is this anything to worry about? I was told to change the fluid and clean a set of screens? I am also thinking of reprogramming the transmission to the 00011 sport mode, is this a bad idea? Nice to meet everyone, I look forward to learning a lot.

complaint as well as maintenance. Most seem to like the trans software upgrade. I haven't tried it. Have a 97 also, also overdue for timing belt.

I would just bring it to somebody who is an Audi tech, or recent audi tech.....so much easier.
It's really a PITA. They'll charge you about $800-1000 labor, if you can afford it, spend the money.
Good luck and congrats!

I am in Richmond, Va.
Ordered the timing belt kit, waterpump, etc from ECS Tuning, but I pretty sure I am going to spend the money to have a indy mechanic put it all on.
Is the transmission service DIY?

I've changed feelings on that.
I wouldn't do it, on a high-mileage car, unless there were significant problems with the trans, in which case, I would try it.
Also, on a high mileage car, I'd probably use a bottle of Lubegard red, on re-fill.
