Default Hey you S8 owners. How fast from 0-60 is the S8 really...

It's hard to believe that fifty more HP over the A8 only yeilds a .4 second increase (6.7 to 6.3.)I've driven a few S8 and they "feel" more like 5.9 or 5.8. Any of you ever clocked your cars 0-60?

TIA

Default Thanks April! I'm assuming that a "hard launch" is....

flooring the car with a heavy foot on the brake pedal and then letting it rip? What's your guess what the new S8 with 450HP and 398 pounds-feet of torque will do 0-60 given about the same car weight?

Thanks again

I would think the new S8's all new four cam 48V 6L V12 with FSI will have more horsepower and much more torque than the 450 hp and 398 ft/lbs of torque that many sources say it will have. My guess is 480 hp and 500 ft/lbs of torque. As for the RS8 my guess is that model will have a 6.5L variant of the all new four cam 48V V12 with FSI that will produce 520 hp and 540 ft/lbs of torque. This is all just a guess but it would not only make sense to me and probably most other people on AudiWorld as well but it would set the new S8 and especially the new RS8 further apart from the 6.0 variant (the top variant) of the new and enormously unnecessary VW Phaeton. That variant of the new VW Phaeton will have the older design four cam 48V 6L W12.

How do you know that there is going to be an RS8? When?

Default Actually, I was just guessing that there is going to be an RS variant of the new A8

I never said there was actually going to be an RS8. And now that I think about it RS variants of the current A4, new A6 and new A8 seem largely unnecessary because the cost would be too high. In addition from what I understand Audi is going to design the S variants of the current A4, new A6 and A8 to be highly competitive in performance and price with similar versions of BMW's M cars and MB's AMG cars. As for the powertrain I am guessing the new S8's all new four cam 48V V12 with FSI will displace 6.5L and produce 480 hp and 500 ft/lbs of torque. I am also guessing this engine will be mated exclusively to an all new tiptronic six speed automatic transmission with all of the features of the current tiptronic five speed auto. The only difference is the tiptronic six speed auto will probably have shift paddles behind the steering wheel like the Avantissimo concept. BTW, all of this is also just a guess.

Default Automobile magazine sucks

They are not a very reliable automotive source. Better than CR but worse than most of the others. I think most likely the new S8's four cam 48V 6L W12 with FSI will produce 480 hp and 480 ft/lbs of torque. I could be wrong, but this would make the new S8 much more competitive with the BMW M7 (if it ever becomes a reality), MB S63 AMG and BMW 760Li. 398 ft/lbs of torque pales in comparison with the BMW M7 (again, if it ever becomes a reality), MB S63 AMG and BMW 760Li.

Default What's the difference between the W12 and V12?...(more)

The the May 2002 issue of Automobile Magazine mentioned the new 2004 S8 with a 6.0 liter W12. It is a small blurb under the picture and short article on the RS6 on page 15. At that level of power (450 HP and 398 torque)for the new S8, an RS8 would almost be redundant given our sad lack of an autobahn. Can't imagine that the S8 would cost much more than the RS6. My dealer said that the RS6 would go for between $85,000-90,000 before their $3000 markup.

Default Any mention of the new S6 in that article?

I heard the 2006 S6 (due in mid 2005) is supposed to have an all new four cam 40V 5L V10 with 420 hp and 362 ft/lbs of torque. With 200 fewer pounds due to the use of all aluminum construction, 80 more hp and 52 ft/lbs more torque the new S6 should do 0-60 in the mid to upper four second range. The current S6 which has a four cam 40V 4.2L V8 which produces 340 hp and 310 ft/lbs of torque and does 0-60 in about 6 seconds. Don't know if it matters to you but the new S6 is going to be sold in sedan and avant body styles in North America when it comes out in mid 2005. The only difference between a V12 and a W12 is that a V12 has six cylinders on one side and six on the other. A W12 is two V6s bolted together. Of course a V6 has three cylinders on one side and three on the other. BTW, the new S8 is due in mid 2004 as a 2005.
