I too had the same problem and the VAG read higher than normal coolant temp. This was a big concern to me and I brought it in to Pierce Automotive in Bouckeville, NY (excellent, knowledgeable and honest!!) The readings were about 103 degrees centigrade. Coolant level was ok and we bet it is the thermostat vs the water pump. Nonetheless, I have around 64k on my 2000 A8Q and I might as well replace it all including the timing belt as well. I would not want to have an engine melt down. Good luck and I will post an update when I get the final report
