the Audi manual (and separately the LiftMaster one) indicates this process:

a) clear all codes from the car's homelink unit
b) press the Learn button on the garage opener (flashes for 30sec or something)
c) go to the car and press the homelink button you want to program for 1-2 sec once, or twice (if once doesn't work).

Where does "learn the garage, and then learn the garage again" fit in this process?

Here is what you need to do
a) clear all codes from the car's homelink unit
a1) take you garage door opener remote, go to your car and keep it at 2 inches close to the home link (your car garage door opener)press the button of the car garage door opener which operates the door you want to be opened/closed and one button of your home link, the light of the home link will flash first slowly then rapidly, when rapidly remove both buttons in the same time, then go to the step (b)
b) press the Learn button on the garage opener (flashes for 30sec or something)
c) go to the car and press the homelink button you want to program (the one you pushed in step a1) for 1-2 sec once, twice or three times (if once doesn't work)

You could be right, it's been about a year or so for me.

I had tried using the instructions that came with the door opener that did not work. The ones in my A6 owners manual works 1st try
