Hopping Mad Over Struts (Not Audi)

For those of us that don't hold Audi dealer service in the highest esteem, I chuckled as I read this reader's comments on her Toyota dealer's remedy. I quote an excerpt from Tom and Ray Magliozzi's "Car Talk" in today's Los Angeles Daily News.
"I have just been told by our Toyota dealer that our 1998 Avalon with 55,000 miles needs new 'strut plates' AND struts, for a mere $1600; the car is incredibly noisy (thunk, thunk, thunk) when going over any size bump and even on a smooth road, and there is a very, very bad vibration on the passenger side at high speeds (50 mph).
The dealer initially blamed it on poor tires, which we have since replaced with no change in the noise.
Having purchased Toyota's 'flagship' car, I certainly do not think it's unreasonable that we need to incur this great expense at fairly low mileage. Any thoughts on what we should do next?"
