My 2000 A8 had the transmission rebuilt at 80k miles, and I'm now closing in on 150k. I was wondering if they do anything differently during a rebuild to increase the life of the transmission.
My transmission seems very solid right now (just a slight hard downshift from 1st to 2nd gear). Had the filter and ATF changed around 10k ago, and I drive mainly highway.
I just want to get a perspective from someone on how much life I can expect.

Maybe impossible to answer...depends on who rebuilt it, when they did it, how thorough they were, did they seek and find other damage or potentially failing parts not part of a standard rebuild...and on & on(?)
What happened at 80K miles, requiring the rebuild and who did the work?

Not sure what happened at 80k - didn't own the car then. All I know is that the Carfax shows a 'Transmission Service' at 79.9k (still under warranty?). This is ambiguous since it could have been only a flush.
Although, from what I gather from reading other's comments, there is no way I could get to 147k without a rebuild.
I bought the car at 127k not knowing when or if it had been rebuilt. So I'm kind of in the dark right now just crossing my fingers that the trans has many thousands of miles left.

Many have gotten more than 150K miles out of these transmissions...I know of many that have gone to 185K miles before a rebuild was needed...some beyond that. Remember, mainly failures are reported on forums...a few successes, when asked directly for mileages...but the majority of D2 owners are not even posters on forums. Granted, beyond 185K mile stories are not common...but your being at 147K miles does NOT assure the fact that yours has had a rebuild.
"Trans service" at 80K miles could be anything...water in the tcm, bad electrical connection, atf change...or even just an investigated complaint from a previous owner that only required a scan and no repair. Most sellers and Audi data bases will spell out a rebuild in particular to boast of the car's increased long term reliability.

Every now and then is suggested.
Have it serviced at least every 30K or every 2 years. Change the filter and use the best fluid you can find. Flushing is a personal decision (I do not).
"I" use Ams Oils middle grade ATF (not the Performance ATF) and a Polymer additive. I also use the additive in my S2 V6 Buick Turbo 400 Toy (and all the other cars I own), it works (very) well keeping the converter from being destroyed.
