I bought my '01 S8, knowing the transmission issues. So reliability wasn't my deciding factor. I bought this fine automobile because of what it is, a comfortable, well put together luxury cruiser.
This is my 3rd D2 - I've owned a '96 4,2 QS, a '98 S8 before this, and sure, there are small niggles that can afflict D2's, I still have no regrets. It's got understated looks, good reserves of power when I need it and a well-appointed interior, important if you spend a lot of time in your car.
I've owned over 45 cars in my driving years, and for myself, there's never been a nicer way to travel long distance. As has been stated, the ZF tranny's a weak link, if you could deal with that, find a good example, and stick to 30,000 mile fluid and filter changes, you'll find the big D2 a surprisingly easy car to live with.
