Default Hunting and Thunking guide

Another A8 heard from...

I've got the hunting in my 97 w.94k on the clock. -The usual symtoms; light throttle 40-55, "which gear do I want? which gear do I want!" I'm also the proud owner of the highway off-throttle thunk; ya learn to live with it...

I had a (first ever) tranny flush and filter 2 weeks ago. It was recoded to sport by Skiracer 1.5 years back. Car definitely shifts more smoothly and willingly, but hunting still there.

Could someone post a summary of the knowledge up until now? What paths have been explored, what different shops/ audi service centers have said, if anyone has licked it, and maybe a roll call on how many listers are suffering?

Thanks

Dennis

Default Current hot discussion is the MAF sensor, and a few people are trying ...

new and rebuilt MAF sensors. Initially, the tranny is CURED .. then we don't know yet. Time will tell.

Default I actually get good results by recoding my TCU from.....

00001 to 00011 and back again every 3 weeks or so. After every recode it seems that the hunt and thunk behaviour goes away fro a while. I think that the recode forces the TCU to start from scratch on its "learning". Unfortunately, I believe that the TCU is learning the wrong things.

Would you be willing to re-code me as a test?

And does the tranny un-learn if you unhook the battery for 1/2 an hour? That trick worked on my old subaru svx, a car also known for tranny problems and confusion.

It was a nice car though. I went from my '88 Audi 90 (235k! what a trooper!) to the SVX for a year or so to a 93 100cs into an accident (GRR!) into the A8. Yeah, I'm an Audi guy. Refinement at a low low price. My brother got a G35 sedan... I was disappointed; it ran rather crude and noisy.

Default Re: 00011 and 00012

Shouldn't the TCU stop learning when DSP is shut off?

Interesting. It looks like there are several (including myself) who own and A8 and SVX. Also, as many SVX owners have done in the past, I have been thinking about taking the A8 to Level 10 to see if they can sort it out, as they've done a good number of "bulletproof" SVX rebuilds.

Default You would think so, but based on my experience it continues to adapt.....

with any of the codings. DSP may turn off with the 11 and 12 codes, but I believe that the TCU still performs adaptations to the various inputs it gets.
