Hunting / Torque Converter

I have a '98 A8 4.2 with...50,000 miles. It has been maintained well and it's my wife's "winter and crappy weather car" - thus the low miles. (it never rains in Seattle)
It does the 35-40 mph hunt when in "D". I have replaced the trans fluid, filter, etc. The dealer tells me the Torque Converter is going bad (fault codes) It's really not too bad yet and it's OK in Tiptronic so I told my wife to shift (she drives a 911 too)
Bottom line: There is nothing else my wife would rather drive (for what the car is worth) and I'm willing to pay to keep this car nice.
But - if the dealer (or my brother and I do it on our lift) does the torque converter, will it fix the problem or is still likey to be problematic due to TPS and/or transmission solenoids/other?
I don't exactly follow all of the Tozo threads but if I don't do the torque converter, I can possibly band-aid it but it won't go away, correct?

I had the same issue as you. Same car, same year.
What I had done was a full rebuild, and also got a new TC put in at the time. Everything seems to work great now.
What you said is correct. Many of the "fixes" that some of the members here are using are not permanent. That being said, they are very practical and far less expensive than replacing, let's say, the valve body!
What Tozo is doing is modifying the valve body, as well as the Throttle Position Sensor in order to prevent the constant locking/unlocking of the TC. (right?)
I'm going to leave the rest of this up to the transmission whiz-kids, who can give you a better idea of what YOU should do.

I bought my A8 CPO at the dealer at 52k (5 1/2 years ago), anyway it just had a whole new trans put into the thing. They told me at the time that this trans had "all the fixes of the newer post facelift ones". Yea right but the crazy thing is that I now have 128k on it and it has NEVER (knock on wood) hunted or thumped.
See if the trans can be saved by doing the Tozo fixes and flush / refill.
Good luck!

I have an 98 with 51K mi.....My 98 was starting to hunt & thump, the hunting was pronounced but the thump was pretty light as the TC and other trans parts are proably not as worn as say on a trans with twice the milage.
It's been 2 days since I put in the moded equipment and the results are excellent thus far.
