Default So how many times did it take to get it right?

I got the 5 or so A8's that I did the TB change on correct.....but the one that I didn't was mine because I always did it when the block was warm.

Default You need to "excercise" the belt a few times

1. Get the crank set at correct position.

2. The cams sprockets should be ever so loose on the cam shaft so they are not locked and can rotate on the shaft slightly.

3. Set the tension on the pulley to achieve the length required (can't remember what that is). Lock it in place.

4. Excercise the belt by moving it back and forth slightly on both sides of the pulley, just push it to the left and to the right a few times.

5. Wait for everything to relax (1-2 minutes), the measured length will most likely change a little, and you'll know if you need to go a little tighter or looser.

6. Lock the cams down.

It's been a while, but it's something like that.

And wear mechanics gloves!!!

:-)

My wife also has a 3.0 A4... how many miles before you changed it out? I did the TB on my A8 a while ago, is it any worse?

Default have not done one on a v8 so I cant really compare... very special tooks are needed for the 3.0....

the cam locks are pretty critical.. cam covers need to come off to install them. if you have not gotten your parts yet - get them from Blaufergnegen and rent the tools from them.... best deal out there.

I changed the belt at 58k because the water pump went out...

Default Took me 3 or 4 times on my V8q...

I have no idea why there are two eccentric pulleys and one spring loaded shock. Why? WHY?? Most cars get along just fine with just one eccentric pulley.

Rotating that engine 720° got old pretty quick.
