If you like the A4 size, I suspect you'll be much happier in the new S4 than the S8.
Personally, the S/A4 cars are too small for me. I'd prefer an S8. THe only reason I'd look at the S4 is the manual transmission. And as nice as those are, they aren't real reliable yet, if the board here is any measure.
If you want a TIP, then get the size that suits you best.
Both are excellent cars.

the ne s4 is a much better car then the old twin turbo one but, although bigger, is still not very big.
the s8 is a fabulous car, it has audi's best ride/handling compromise although, as i've said, there is not much in it wrt the new s4. fabulous motor as well. there is something about a 260kw v8 with a redline over 7k...

Get the S8 and be the BIG DOG. How much do you want to spend on maintenance? Neither is cheap to maintain. The S4 cost you only your arm. The S8 is your arm and your leg. I have a 2002 S8, Im still on warranty but not for much longer. After the warranty is finished so is the car because I have seen the bill you get when an off warranty S8 comes back from the shop...its insanity!

IMHO, the only time the A8/S8 feels too large is when backing into parking spots. From the driver's seat, it feels perfect everywhere else, including On Track.

I just went through this dilemma and sided with an S8. A Larger (but not that much heavier) car than the new S4, it really drives much smaller than you would think. They really nailed the suspension tuning on them down, it has a very smooth ride yet is surprisingly nimble. The build quality is superb and it performs very well. Only drawback for me was lack of a manual which I was finally willing to accept (I still have another toy for those days). I got a car that was Audi POC which covers me warranty wise until July of 2008, this will give me some time to save up for the after warranty maintenance costs.

I luv mine, the size, ride, handling and especially how rare it is. I see multiple s4's every day, but A8's maybe once a week and S8 less than that.
