I had the same dilemma
About two months ago I decided to get a nice used 02 S8 instead of a new S4. I had reservations about going to an automatic tranny, and was a little worried about the size of the car. I can now say that I don't regret the decision at all. The S8 'feels' like a much smaller car than it is, and the tip works pretty well. I am considering having a tip chip installed for slightly faster shifts however. (Is my sife reading this? Xmas is coming...)
I owned an 01 S4 and can say without question that the S8 is a MUCH better car in terms of build quality - no comparison. Not sure about the new S4, but there is a reason that the S8 stickered for $75k. You get what you pay for (usually).
