Many insurers either don't transmit info to various central databases (called Index Bureaus), and even with those insurers that do transmit info, if the adjusters don't enter the VIN numbers properly (or at all), then the damage info and payout will never show up in any of those databases.
I can tell you that I have direct personal knowledge of a very large insurer's claims operation, and the majority of their claims adjusters failed to complete the VIN fields in their computers before closing out their files. The result is that many many accidents, with small and/or large payouts, could never be tracked by these national databases.
I've used CarFax before, and its a useful tool, but it is certainly possible for a vehicle to have an accident, with an insurer having paid money to fix it, and yet the car comes up with a clean CarFax.
My winterbeater car was rearended, with the other guy's insurer (a huge huge insurer) paying for some damages. A year later I ran a CarFax on my car, and it came up clean.
My wife's wagon was hit, and had thousands of dollars in damages, paid by the other guy's insurance (a fairly large insurer), and a year later, the CarFax on that car came up clean.
I would use CarFax again, but I will keep in mind that the results from CarFax cannot be relied upon as being 100% accurate.

Banal:
Looks like you bought your A8L from Omar @ Intersport? He serviced my A6 for 4 years and I do trust his knowledge/service. I purchased an S500 from him not long ago & have been very happy.
